Within minutes 21,000 free tickets to the Nipsey Hussle’s memorial service at the Staples Center being made available, every one them had been claimed.
It wasn’t long before they were selling for up to $400-a-pop as scalpers tried to prit from the high demand. Craigslist and eBay battled to stop the resale the tickets on their websites.
eBay disallowed the tickets for violating its policy priting f tragedy or despair.
AXS, the ticketing company distributing the complimentary tickets made it clear that the tickets were non-transferrable and that all members in a group would be required to enter together. However, that didn’t stop people from putting them up on sale.
The maximum number tickets allocated was set at four per person, with only Californian residents eligible.
The Staples Center opened its doors for the Thursday event at 8 am, with the service starting at 10 am. Among those praising the slain rapper were Snoop Dogg and Barack Obama, whose heartfelt letter was read by Karen Civil.
After the service, a 25.5-mile procession headed to the Crenshaw district where the funeral home is situated. The march has been dubbed ‘Victory Lap,’ the title Hussle’s only studio album.
Nipsey, a respected hip hop figure in Los Angeles, was shot dead on March 31st close to the Marathon Clothing Store he co-owned.
He was only 33. His efforts to better his community had won him admirers throughout the city L.A. and all over the world.
The suspect in the Murder, Eric Holder, has since been arrested and has pleaded not guilty. He is still in custody with his bail set at $7,040,000. Police believe that Holder is the person who was captured on surveillance video walking up to Nipsey and a group friends and opening fire.
The rapper died less than an hour later from his gunshot wounds.
Nipsey’s death was met with an outpouring love from all over the world with tributes pouring in from some the most respected figures in entertainment. He is survived by his girlfriend, actress Laura London, and two children.
